A decomposition of student achievement gap by gender in China: Evidence from random class assignment

Using random class assignment in the China Education Panel Survey, we study gender achievement gap of lower secondary students China. Girls outperform boys Chinese and English by around 0.5 SD, holding all factors including hukou status, cognitive ability schools attended constant. The Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition reveals that most cannot be explained observables regardless subjects this is contrary to scores. Quantile results indicate unexplained “girl premium” largely monotonically decreasing conditional quantiles exam score distribution for subjects, being particularly large at tails, but vanishes altogether top decile Math.
